The South African seed industry has a long history, with its first organised industry association established in 1940 through the South African Seedmen’s Association. Since then, the sector has undergone significant development, evolving from a largely production-focused industry into a highly competitive and innovative market serving South Africa’s diverse agricultural needs.
In 1989, the South African National Seed Organization (SANSOR) was established as the representative body for the local seed sector. Its role is to promote and protect the interests of the seed industry while supporting collaboration, responsible industry practices and the continued development of South Africa’s seed trade.
