Chemical Engineering Bursaries in South Africa: 2027 Guide

Chemical engineering bursaries in South Africa come mainly from three kinds of funder: sector education and training authorities (SETAs), large process and mining companies, and government-linked agencies. Most require Matric Mathematics and Physical Science at a high level, a strong overall average and proof of acceptance at a public university or TVET college. Mining engineering bursaries follow the same pattern, with more weight on where you live and on vacation work. Below you will find what the funders cover, what they ask for, how the paperwork works and how to plan your applications.
TL;DR
- The CHIETA 2026/27 undergraduate bursary prioritises Chemical Engineering and pays tuition up to R76,000 a year.
- Mining-company bursaries often add books, accommodation and paid vacation work, but come with a bursary-loan agreement and no guaranteed job.
- Expect Matric Mathematics and Physical Science, a 75% average on the CHIETA programme, and household-income preference below R350,000.
- Application windows are short and recur yearly. Gather certified documents before the window opens and check each provider’s official page for the current dates.

Who funds chemical engineering students
There is no single national chemical engineering bursary. Funding is spread across several types of provider, and knowing which type you are dealing with tells you most of what to expect.
SETAs. These are the sector bodies that fund skills in their industry. CHIETA, which serves the chemical and allied industries, is the clearest example for chemical engineers. Its 2026/27 Industrial Futures bursary prioritises Chemical Engineering and other qualifications aligned with petroleum, base chemicals, glass, explosives, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, FMCG, speciality chemicals and surface coatings, according to its official bursary advert. The mining SETA (the MQA) also funds students, which we cover below.
Large employers. Fuel, chemicals, steel, paper and mining companies fund engineering students to build their own pipeline of graduates. Names that regularly come up in search results for this topic include Sasol, Hatch, Minopex and ArcelorMittal. Their programmes usually cover several engineering disciplines in one advert, so read the list of fields carefully before assuming chemical engineering is included.
Government and state-linked bodies. Municipalities, provincial departments and agencies fund engineering students for scarce skills. Our listings include Magalies Water engineering bursaries and KZN EDTEA engineering bursaries, which are worth checking if you live in those areas and your field is covered.

What the CHIETA bursary covers
Because CHIETA publishes its terms clearly, it is a useful benchmark for what a chemical engineering bursary looks like.
| Item | CHIETA 2026/27 Industrial Futures bursary |
|---|---|
| Level | Undergraduate |
| Funding | Tuition against the official statement of account, up to R76,000 per year |
| Citizenship and age | South African citizen, aged 16 to 35 |
| Matric | Recently completed, with Mathematics and Physical Science and a 75% overall average |
| Placement | 2026 acceptance at a public tertiary institution or TVET college |
| Preference | Household income below R350,000, or in the R350,000 to R600,000 missing-middle range |
All of this comes from the CHIETA advert. Note what the figure means in practice: R76,000 is a ceiling tied to your statement of account, not a flat payment. If your fees are lower, the bursary follows the fees.
If you prefer to work-integrate instead of, or after, studying, CHIETA also offers a funded workplace route. We list the CHIETA internships offering R7,000 monthly for 24 months, which suits graduates who still need experience.
Mining and mining engineering bursaries
Many readers searching for chemical engineering funding also look at mining, since mineral processing sits between the two fields. Two official or institutional notices show how this funding works.
The Saldanha Bay Municipality published an MQA notice for 2026 describing 430 opportunities across scarce skills, including Chemical Engineering and Mining Engineering. It said funding covered tuition plus allowances for accommodation, books and meals, per the municipality’s notice. That makes the MQA route one of the broader packages, and it explicitly reaches unemployed applicants.
Kumba Iron Ore’s 2026 notice, relayed on the University of the Western Cape’s announcements page, shows a company-specific version. It accepted first-, second- and third-year Mining Engineering students, particularly applicants residing in or originating from the Northern Cape. It asked for evidence of registration or provisional acceptance and academic results.
If you are exploring other mining-linked funders, see our listings for the Glencore Coal bursary and the RBM bursaries, where civil and mechanical applicants use different links. For a non-degree route into the industry, read our guide to mining learnerships in South Africa.

Conditions that come with the money
A bursary is rarely a pure gift. Read these conditions before you accept.
- Academic performance. Many programmes are performance-based, so you must pass your modules and progress on time to keep funding.
- Bursary-loan agreements. Kumba described its bursary as covering tuition, books, accommodation and paid vacation work, and recipients had to sign a bursary-loan agreement, as the UWC notice explains. In plain terms, funding can turn into a debt if you do not meet the terms.
- Vacation work. The same notice required vacation work in the Northern Cape. Structured workplace exposure is valuable for an engineer, but plan your holidays around it.
- No guaranteed job. Kumba stated that graduate placement was not guaranteed. Do not assume a bursary equals employment, and ask any funder what happens after graduation.
- Income preference. CHIETA gives preference by household income, so your proof of income can influence the outcome as much as your marks.
If you are unsure how these conditions compare across funders, our bursary requirements guide lists the common eligibility rules in one place.
Entry requirements for chemical engineering
A bursary only helps if you are admitted to the degree, so check the university’s own rules early. They differ by institution and qualification type.
| Institution and programme | Key requirements |
|---|---|
| University of Pretoria, BEng Chemical Engineering (four years) | NSC or IEB English level 5, Mathematics level 6, Physical Sciences level 6 and an APS of 35. The programme is ECSA-accredited, per the UP yearbook. |
| University of Johannesburg, BEng Tech Chemical Engineering (three years, NQF level 7) | APS 30, English 50%, Mathematics or Technical Mathematics 60% and Physical Science 60%, per the UJ course page. |
| North-West University, Chemical Engineering | Mathematics level 6, Physical Sciences level 6 and Home or First Additional Language level 5. NWU notes that capacity constraints mean meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. |
Two patterns matter for bursary hunters. First, Mathematics and Physical Science carry the most weight, in both admission and funding. Second, the CHIETA average of 75% is higher than some universities’ minimum subject marks, so a bursary can be harder to win than a place. If you are in the North West, browse our page of bursaries and opportunities in North West to see what is listed near you.
Documents to prepare
Most rejected applications fail on paperwork, not marks. Based on the CHIETA and MQA notices, prepare these before any window opens:
- A certified copy of your ID.
- Final Matric results, or your highest qualification, and academic records if you are already studying.
- Proof of registration or acceptance. CHIETA asks for registration proof before contract signing.
- Recent proof of household income, or an unemployment affidavit where the funder accepts one.
- Certified IDs of your parent or guardian.
The CHIETA advert lists the first five items for its programme, and the Saldanha Bay MQA notice asks unemployed applicants for similar documents, including Grade 12 or Grade 11 results. Scan everything into one folder at a legible resolution so you can upload it quickly.
When to apply
Windows are short and they repeat every year, so the pattern matters more than any single date.
- SETA bursaries. CHIETA’s 2026/27 window ran from 30 January 2026 to 27 February 2026 at 15:00. Late applications were excluded, and applicants with no feedback by 30 April 2026 were told to treat their applications as unsuccessful (CHIETA). Expect a similar early-year window in future cycles.
- MQA-funded awareness notices. The Saldanha Bay notice for 2026 studies closed on 31 July 2025, so mining funding can close the year before you study.
- Company bursaries. Kumba’s 2026 deadline fell on 19 May 2026, with applications through the CareerWise platform and shortlisted candidates going through assessments and interviews.
The practical lesson: begin in the middle of Grade 12, keep a calendar of recurring windows, and confirm current dates on each funder’s official page, since they change every cycle. Never pay anyone to submit an application for you. Legitimate bursaries do not charge fees.
Bursary or scholarship?
People use the words interchangeably, but there is a general difference. A scholarship usually rewards academic excellence, talent or achievement. A bursary is typically aimed at students who need financial help and show the potential to succeed, and in South Africa many company bursaries come with a work-back obligation. In practice, funders blur the line, so judge each offer by its listed criteria and obligations, not by its label. If you are on a TVET route, our guide to the R350,000 cutoff and TVET bursary requirements explains how income thresholds work.
Our perspective
We see the same mistake every year: students apply to the one famous bursary and wait. Chemical engineering funders are few and competitive, and the strongest applicants build a shortlist of eight to ten programmes across SETAs, employers and state bodies, then match each one against their marks, province and household income before a window opens.
We also encourage students to read the obligations as closely as the benefits. A package that includes paid vacation work and a loan agreement is generous, but it is a contract. Ask what happens if you change course, fail a year or are not offered a job. Funders such as the ones we list publish their conditions, and the answers are usually in the advert.
Finally, keep the engineering path wide. Mining, chemicals, water and energy all employ chemical engineers, so a bursary from a neighbouring sector can still lead where you want to go. Our job is to verify each listing, show the checklist and send you straight to the official application page, never to take your application or your money.

FAQ
Can I get a chemical engineering bursary with a 70% average?
It depends on the funder. CHIETA’s 2026/27 programme asked for a 75% overall Matric average, so a 70% would fall short there. Other funders set their own thresholds, and some weigh household income and province heavily, so check each advert’s checklist.
Do mining engineering bursaries cover accommodation?
Some do. The MQA notice published by Saldanha Bay Municipality said funding included allowances for accommodation, books and meals, and Kumba’s bursary covered tuition, books, accommodation and paid vacation work. Cover differs by programme, so confirm it with the provider.
Do I have to work for the company after graduating?
Often there is a work-back or vacation-work condition, but not always. Kumba required a bursary-loan agreement and stated that placement was not guaranteed. Read the agreement before you sign and ask what repayment looks like if you do not complete the terms.
Can I apply if I am already at university?
Sometimes. Kumba’s 2026 notice accepted first-, second- and third-year Mining Engineering students, while CHIETA’s undergraduate programme was aimed at recent Matriculants. Look for notices that mention continuing students.
