Mkhondo Local Municipality Internship Programme 2026

Mkhondo Local Municipality is recruiting graduates for five internship opportunities under its Corporate Services and Financial Services departments.

The internships form part of the National Treasury Financial Management and Budget Reform Programme and are aimed at helping young graduates gain practical experience for careers in local government.

Each internship runs for:

24 months

Successful candidates will receive a stipend of:

ICT Internship - X1

Applicants must have recently obtained a relevant three-year tertiary qualification.

The minimum requirements are Grade 12 and a Diploma or Degree in:

Information and Communication Technology

Computer Science

or a related field.

Applicants must also be computer literate.

Preference will be given to candidates residing within the Mkhondo Local Municipality boundaries.

Applicants must not have previously participated in an internship or similar programme.

ICT Intern Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist municipal users with basic computer hardware and software problems and help identify and resolve common ICT faults.

Other responsibilities include installing computers, monitors, keyboards, printers and other approved ICT equipment, as well as connecting and configuring computers and peripherals to the municipal network under supervision.

The intern will also assist with checking network cables, switches, routers and other equipment for basic faults, support users experiencing internet or shared-drive access problems and report more complex technical issues to the ICT Supervisor.

Finance Intern Responsibilities

Finance interns will gain practical experience in municipal financial administration.

Duties include assisting with financial schedules, registers and reports, capturing expenditure transactions, maintaining payment registers and supporting financial controls.

Interns may also assist with preparing cut-off lists for non-paying customers, customer-account data cleansing, maintaining registers for late estate consumer accounts, processing revenue transactions, tariff-related data and supporting mid-year budget and performance reviews.

Skills and Competencies

Applicants for both internship streams should have good written and verbal communication skills, leadership potential and strong interpersonal skills.

Candidates should also be able to work long hours when required, meet deadlines, pay attention to detail and demonstrate good computer literacy.
