• You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for all subjects in your previous year of study
• You must be studying at a recognised and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa

• You must have good leadership, supervisory and management skills
• You must NOT have a criminal record

WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY ARE COVERED BY THE BARBERTON MINES BURSARY?

Barberton Mines is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2027 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded for studies within the following fields:

• Electrical Engineering
• Geology
• Mechanical Engineering
• Mining Engineering

WHAT EXPENSES DOES THE BARBERTON MINES BURSARY COVER?

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation, prescribed textbooks, electronic equipment and a stipend.

Students will also have the opportunity to partake in vacation work during university holidays, allowing them to gain necessary skills in the mining industry, exposure to fields of expertise and to gain critical business competencies.

WHAT DOES BARBERTON MINES DO?

Barberton Mines, situated near Barberton in Mpumalanga, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pan African Resources PLC and is one of South Africa’s longest-established gold mining operations. The company specialises in the exploration, extraction and processing of high-grade gold ore, contributing significantly to the country’s mining sector while supporting employment and economic development in the region.

The Barberton Mines operation comprises three underground mines - Fairview, Consort and Sheba - which have collectively been producing gold for well over a century. Renowned for their rich ore bodies and long mining history, these operations continue to benefit from ongoing investment in modern mining methods, safety initiatives and operational efficiency, helping to sustain gold production while maintaining a strong focus on responsible mining practices.
