Who can apply

• You must be studying towards a National Diploma/ BTech or Bachelor’s Degree qualification within one of the fields of study listed above
• You must be registered to study at a recognised and accredited institute of Higher Education in South Africa
• You must have a strong academic record, with a minimum overall average of 60%
• Preference will be given to students from the Mawewe, Matsamo and Lugedlane communities (however, students from other areas are also encouraged to apply)

WHAT FIELDS OF STUDY DOES THE AFRIMAT BURSARY COVER?

Afrimat Nkomati Anthracite is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2027 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded for studies within the following fields (National Diploma/ BTech or Bachelor’s Degree):

• Chemistry
• Industrial Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Mining Engineering

Through their bursary programme, Afrimat hopes to foster a new generation of professional mining and mechanical engineers.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. As such, Afrimat Nkomati Anthracite reserves the right to NOT make an appointment. If you do not receive any feedback, please consider your application unsuccessful.

WHAT DOES AFRIMAT NKOMATI ANTHRACITE DO?

Afrimat is a leading South African supplier of construction, industrial and mining materials, serving a diverse range of industries and markets. Its product portfolio includes construction materials such as aggregates, bricks, blocks, ready-mix concrete and paving products, as well as industrial materials including lime and related lime products. The group also supplies bulk commodities such as anthracite, iron ore and manganese.

One of Afrimat’s mining operations is Nkomati Anthracite in Mpumalanga, close to the borders of Eswatini and Mozambique. The operation covers more than 11,000 hectares and includes both the Mangweni underground mining section and the Madadeni opencast operation. Its strategic location provides access to established transport routes connected to the Maputo area, helping to improve logistics efficiency and reduce transportation costs for customers.

Afrimat Nkomati Anthracite produces high-quality anthracite, a form of coal valued for its low sulphur content. Coal extracted from the various mining areas is transported to a central processing facility, where it undergoes beneficiation using a dual-circuit dense-medium separation plant. This process separates and upgrades the coal, producing anthracite suitable for a range of industrial applications.
